In this article I explain what an accountability buddy is, what it means for ADHD folk, and how to get one.
What is an Accountability Buddy?
Everyone has experienced an accountability buddy in one form or another. A teacher holds you accountable of missing assignments and gives you reminders for due dates. A parent holds you accountable of chores and behaviors and watches over you to make sure you do your best. An accountability buddy is similar, but instead encourages a certain goal by regular check-ins and prompting you to stay on task.
Growing up, our parents/guardians, teachers, and other adults of authority are considered as our “accountability buddies.” Once we get older, we find ourselves more accountable for our own actions without a clear sense of direction from someone else. Once we (ADHD adults) enter adulthood and get into the workforce and/or college we find ourselves with a more difficult capacity to achieve our potential as we were when we were younger. Our parents were our original accountability buddies as as adults we sometimes lose that sense of motivation once we move out or go upon our careers
Coaches are a type of accountability buddy who are specialized in a certain field. People hire personal trainers (or fitness coach) to keep them on track for their workout and nutritional goals. Much like an ADHD coach and other life coaches, they work similarly to work on specific goals related to an issue that someone has been struggling with. Accountability buddies with a specialization in a certain field can help target what you need to work on.
Do I Need an Accountability Buddy?
Being accountable of your own actions can be extremely daunting. People with ADHD often have issues starting a project and staying motivated to the end. Often you lose your motivation in the process and it later leads to a pile of unfinished projects. Finding someone who is a push can help. If you feel like you are unable to complete a project on your own, an accountability buddy can be the support you need.
How Can I Find an Accountability Buddy?
Online support groups such as Reddit or in-person groups at CHADD can be a great way to meet a buddy who can keep you on track. Keep in mind that finding an accountability buddy with ADHD often means that you have to reciprocate your part in helping them. If you feel as though you do not have the mental energy to mutually benefit your accountability partner, a coach may be better suited for you.
An accountability buddy doesn’t always have to be an individual person. If you are planning a large project, social media and websites like Kickstarter can be a great tool to give external pressure to finish your project. Simply announcing a plan or goal to the general public can give a “good anxiety” to pull through with your goal. If you plan on losing weight and do not have close friends to support you, consider using tools such as TikTok to document your journey and have external pressure from followers to reach your goal.
If you are looking for an accountability buddy as soon as possible and don’t know where to start, The ADD Coach offers check ins and nudges to make sure your assignments are completed promptly.
